We Are Certified Dementia Practitioners!

certified dementia practitioners

In early April, I joined some of SHS office and caregiving staff to participate in an "Alzheimer's Disease and Dementia Care" seminar. Attendees also had the opportunity to become Certified Dementia Practitioners, earning a CDP if they chose to submit an application and commit to continuing education. It's a win/win as families we serve realize the level of knowledge that our Caregivers bring to the work and, for employees, provide deeper insight and understanding of the needs of the clients and families who entrust us with the care of their loved ones. Ultimately, it's our clients who benefit from what we can bring to the table to support them in their journey with dementia.

The training, led by Tammy Pozerycki, was informative, detailed and interactive. It was a day filled with best practices and ideas around working with people who are living with cognitive impairment. From tips on how to physically approach an agitated person, to making a room in someone's home more friendly, to ideas about working with people resistant to care, there was an abundance of information to use out in the field and to boost the confidence of those of us who work with older adults with dementia.

There are other resources that are too many to mention. I believe I'm better able to answer questions and help advise families who look to SHS to arrange companionship and other support for their family members. I will proudly display my Certificate of Attendance and the new letters after my name and look forward to continued learning!
