Healthy eating makes a big difference!

Meal preparation is one of the most common tasks we are asked to assist with, and it makes sense! Good nutrition is important for all ages, but is especially important as we age. There are a variety of reasons why older adults may struggle with regularly eating nutritious meals including loss of appetite, newfound inability to cook, decreased access to transportation, and memory loss. There are many medical conditions that can be greatly improved by a healthy diet. Older adults are more susceptible to diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, low bone density, and many types of digestive issues. Lack of regular access to nutritious meals can wreak havoc on the health of older adults.

Why is a regular healthy diet so important?

Older adults who are not properly nourished can also face a number of debilitating symptoms including difficulty focusing, depression, excessive fatigue, mood swings, physical weakness, and vertigo. As we age, our bodies don’t absorb nutrients as effectively, so it’s important that people get enough B12, protein, complex carbohydrates, calcium, and vitamin D (and many more types of nutrients). A healthy diet and regular physical activity can make a big difference in the quality of life for older adults.

How can we help?

As a companion-based home care agency, our goal is to help our clients stay as active and healthy as possible. Meal preparation is an important task that we take seriously. Many of our companions love to cook and can ensure their clients have access to fresh and healthy food by helping with grocery shopping, meal planning, and cooking. Some of our clients even enjoy helping with the process, even if they’re no longer able to fully cook on their own; making meal preparation a social activity as well!
